The girls also won both the 400 and the 1600 meter race. In total, the boys crushed all the other teams, scoring 121 points, which was a quarter of the total points possible. Ontario was second place with only 67 points. As for the girls, they won with 115 points with Valley right behind them with 110. Congratulations to the track team for their league win!

DC/ny 8th grade trip
Last week, all of our eighth graders went on a historical field trip to the east coast. On the first day, they landed and went to breakfast at Old Country Buffet and then to the Gettysburg Museum and Battlefields. For dinner, they went to get pizza and meet up with Mr. Kempton, who came all the way from Maryland to have dinner with the eighth graders. After dinner on the first day, they went to the Kennedy Center. On the second day was a delicious breakfast at Hard Rock Cafe, and then the graduating class went to the Newseum, the Holocaust Museum, and then finally to the Lincoln memorial. At the Lincoln memorial, Benjamin Trenery gave a fantastic depiction of Martin Luther King Junior's speech, "I Have A Dream." On the third day of the trip, the eighth graders first went to Arlington Cemetery where they saw the mass amount of people who lost their lives for our country. There was also a Laying of the Wreath Ceremony where four eighth graders lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After that, they went to the Air and Space Smithsonian, and then to the Spy Museum. On day 4, they went to National Archives and then to Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. Day 5 was very eventful, because, after breakfast, the soon graduating class went to the Capitol, the Library of Congress, Ford's Theatre, both the Natural History and American History Smithsonians, and then to the Pentagon memorial. The sixth day was when they left DC and went on a bus ride to New York. After that, they went to Central Park and went to the top of the Empire State Building and looked at the beautiful view. On day 7, the eighth graders took a ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and then took a ferry to nearby Ellis island. Next, they went to the 9/11 memorial and then, on the last night, went to dinner and then to a broadway show. The broadway show was the Lion King. For the first half of the day on day 8, the students had a free day where they could do whatever they wanted in New York. When the free day was over, the eighth graders went home, and that concluded the eventful DC and New York trip from the class of 2015.

Extreme games!!!

A couple weeks ago, before school was out for Easter break, the Extreme-Ultimate-Almost-Anything-Goes-Olympic Games were held. Always an exciting time, the games are week where fun-packed games are played daily during lunch. On Friday, the climax of the excitement, the entire school meets together in the gym to participate in many more games. School spirit filled the air with cheers and shouts of encouragement. This year, Mrs. Nichols's Nightmares took first, with Mrs. Ditta's Destroyers and Mrs. Ilg's Annihilators coming close behind in second. Third place was Mrs. Watcher's Waffles, and forth was Burd's Banana's. Most definitely a favorite at Friends, the Extreme Games is an action-packed week full of excitement.

March Madness Challenge
As many know, it is currently March Madness. So, Mr. Lewis and Mr. Shires, Professional Bracketologists, proposed a challenge to make a better basketball bracket then each of them. The students were asked to create a basketball bracket and turn it in last Wednesday. Each bracket had points accumulated over the course of the basketball games that they accurately predicted.

Povertees Party!
Written by: Stephen Sweet & Jacob De Pue
On Friday at 6:30-8:30pm Povertees threw an awesome party that raised money to help support the homeless. At the party students were able to select their shirt and iconic Povertees pocket. All the proceeds went to helping the homeless people in our community. They are now able to help give homeless people blankets and clothing. This Thursday Povertees will be collecting blankets and clothes at chapel. Please support us in our second quarter service project, and help yourselves to some amazing shirts!
We asked Hughie Hughes some questions about his organization.
We first asked him: How does Povertees support the homeless community, and how do you spread the gospel to them?
His answer: "I believe what we do is very much in line with what I read in the Gospel. We work with homeless individuals by seeking to help them help themselves. The goal is to provide opportunities over handouts. The way we are doing this now, is through employment and workforce development. We have partnered with the Downtown Women's Center in LA to act as an employer partner. We have just hired our first woman, named Qwing, and she is currently in transition getting off the streets. The goal is to be able to hire more men and women, obviously, but this is where we are starting. I believe that being in community with the most marginalized people in our society is intrinsic to the Gospel. I believe that the way we love and care for them is a huge part of the Gospel. I would hope that my actions would convey the convictions I believe to be true."
We then asked Hughie how the Povertees party went on Friday and he said:
"The pocket party was incredible. The students, staff and parents were all so kind. We sold 154 shirts, which is the most we have ever done at one event. It was a blast for our team, and it is extremely beneficial to our mission and the work we do."

This Year's Play: Aladdin
The Aladdin cast has just been announced and the play is in production. Our team interviewed some of the members. Here's what Aladdin, Timothy Coleman, had said, "I'm pretty excited to be playing the main role because I have a very awesome passion for theater and theater is my jam." Jasmine, Faith Hunt, stated, " my favorite part about the play is bonding with the other characters." This years theme verse is Luke 4:18, "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free." There will be a total of 5 performances this year, 4 of which are open to the general public. The first performance will be Friday, March 12th at 1:30. This will be followed up with performances on Friday, March 13th at 7:00 and Saturday March 14th at 1:00 and 4:00. Make sure to mark these performances on your calendar now!

Lions teams ready to dominate
This week is a pivotal time for FCS sports. The Varsity Football, and JV and Varsity Volleyball are all playing on Tuesday in the playoffs. They have been working hard and cannot wait to dominate.
"I think we we're pretty prepared, we've been working hard, and put in time, effort, and energy," says Mr. Cokely, the Varsity Football coach. The team will be playing a home game, that if they win, they will move on to the Championships. Grant Gast, a player on the Varsity team, says, "Well, I think that with a lot of hard work and dedication in practice, I think we can do really well."
Not only is the Varsity Football team prepared, but the JV and Varsity Volleyball teams are more than ready for success. As Mrs. Gaddis, the JV coach, says, "I am very excited for the playoffs. We played Valley Christian and beat them in League. The girls are prepared to continue playing volleyball with excellence as they always do." Mr. Morford also believes that the Varsity team will do exceptionally well. "With diligent practice . . . we'll have a great chance of winning our fifth consecutive championship."

Art for Liberia

Right now, in Liberia and areas of West Africa, a deadly disease has been killing people. The people there are living in fear, as they are watching their world fall apart around them. That's why we need to help even more this year; we need to help bring them hope. On October 30, from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, about 50 pieces of art made by students here at Friends will be sold in a silent auction on the chapel patio. After the live silent auction(after 10:30 AM), bidding can be made online. An email will be sent out to parents with a link to this site. 100% of the money raised will be donated to Containers of Hope, where they will buy supplies desperately needed in Liberia-food, water, and protective gear.
Mrs. Forrest asks that we will pray for the success of this fundraiser, the safety of the Liberian children, and that this will be a blessing to our community.

Containers of Hope!

October 20, 2014
For many years, our first quarter service project has been Containers of Hope. Containers of Hope is an organization that takes backpacks filled with school supplies and other items to children in Liberia. Normally, Friends fills hundreds of backpacks, but this year will be different. Due to the potentially lethal virus Ebola, backpacks cannot be distributed to the kids. Instead, Friends will hold an art auction, where artwork made by students will be sold. All of the proceeds will be donated to Containers of Hope. Besides the auction, there will be a pie-throwing contest where students can throw pies about Mr. Shires. The money earned from the purchase of the pies will be given to the organization. Despite the changes in the way we help Containers of Hope, the Liberian children will still be blessed. As Mrs. Forrest says, "Because of Ebola, we don't have a choice. we are called to help." So this year, Friends Christian will love the children in the way that God loves us.
Spiritual Emphasis Week

October 13, 2014
Spiritual Emphasis Week is a week dedicated to growing and owning up to a student's faith. Every year, the seventh and eighth graders gather in the sanctuary every morning of the week to hear a message. This year, Ms. Day spoke every day, including in chapel on thursday. She took the school's theme verse (Luke 10:27), and broke it down so students could truly understand what it means to love God, and to love others. On monday, Ms. Day primarily focused on the five types of love: agape, eros, philia, storge, and maniac. She spoke about how people can apply that love to strengthen their faith. Tuesday, she talked about the heart and mind, and how it is crucial that it is balanced. People need to love God with all their heart, and once that is achieved, they can begin to love others. The other part of the verse mentions the soul and strength, which is what she talked about Wednesday. Ms. Day said that, during a difficult trial, people should turn to God for comfort. When people love God with all their souls, that is when they show great strength. In chapel on Thursday, Ms. Day spoke about loving sacrificially, and how faith without deeds is worthless. On the final day of Spiritual Emphasis Week, she spoke about being strong in the Lord, and that people should give up their "idols," or materialistic interests, in order to develop a stronger relationship with God.
a look at praise band

Worship is an essential part of chapel every Thursday and is led by Praise Band. This group is directed by Mrs. Brinnon and Mr. Shires. The two leaders were asked about their goals for worship this year, and they said "For us to love being in God's presence (Mr. Shires)," and "to bless God's ears (Mrs. Brinnon)." At the beginning and end of every chapel, Praise Band sings worship songs that contain biblical references and ultimately bring glory to God. With much difficulty of choosing only one, Mr. Shires said his favorite praise song is "Lord I Lift Your Name on High" because it is an uplifting song that portrays the Gospels. On the other hand, Mrs. Brinnon's favorite song is the "Revelation Song," because "it encompasses the God in which we worship, and, in the song, it says He sent His son to die for our sins and what a powerful God we worship."
